Augusta is a thirty to thirty-five minute run and the furthest south we regularly go. The route is Highway Z and Highway D through New Melle and Defiance, then Highway 94 along the river, and it is a beautiful drive that is also a slow one for a loaded truck — winding, hilly and busy with Katy Trail and winery traffic on a good weekend. We schedule Augusta deliberately and we appreciate a day of notice, because if a truck is already headed that direction the whole day works better.

This is Missouri wine country in the literal legal sense: Augusta was recognised as the first federally designated American Viticultural Area in the country, and the wineries on the ridge above Highway 94 are the reason most people have heard of the place. What matters to us is the building stock underneath the tourism. The village holds genuine 19th-century German settlement construction — brick and frame, plaster on wood lath, stone foundations, old-growth timber — and that is a completely different demolition problem from a subdivision remodel. Plaster runs two to three times drywall weight for the same volume, so the box we send is smaller than the room suggests, and we swap it rather than let anybody overload one. Pre-1980 buildings here should be treated as suspect for asbestos in floor tile and mastic, pipe and duct wrap, plaster skim coat and roofing felt, and pre-1978 work falls under the EPA lead paint rule.

Around the village it is steep river-hill acreage and bottomland. Deck, porch and railing work is constant on the hillside properties, storm and wind damage is heavy through the mature oak and hickory, and the 1993 flood is still the benchmark everybody in the bottoms measures against, with the Missouri running high again in 2019. Winery and event properties add outbuilding work, patio and hardscape rebuilds and periodic big cleanouts. Between the old village stock, the hillside houses and the commercial side, an Augusta container is rarely a simple single-material load.

Two things decide an Augusta job. The first is the drive.
